Towles in Alaska 1895 - 1959 : In the spring of 1899, George Washington Towle and 7 of his sons traveled to Seward, Alaska, from Hollister, CA by train, then by boat from Seattle, WA. They then traveled inland by horse and on foot to a place now called Cooper Landing. They they were part of the Towle-Stetson Group, formed for the purpose of goldmining.

Some of these photos were provided by the granddaughter of Charles Chapman (a member of the Towle-Stetson Group) and others were provided by Mona Painter, a historian of Cooper Landing, AK. The rest belonged to my father.

Armstrongs in South America 1918 - 1925 : In 1918, after building power plants in California, perhaps the job was done for then, John W. F. Armstrong sailed to Chile to work as an engineer in the Anaconda Copper Mine at Chuquicamata. His wife and two children couldn't accompany him because Mabel was pregnant with their third child. When baby Eric was 6 months old, Mabel took the children on a steamer to join her husband.
Eventually they landed in Brazil, living in Nictheroy while John ferried to Rio de Janiero for his work.
