justsusan > This gigantic statue of Christ stands atop Corcovado and overlooks the city of Rio de Janeiro.
The design was conceived in 1923 while the Armstrongs were still there, but it wasn't built for many years after that, due to financial problems.
Mom was extremely pleased to be able to go to the top of the mountain and see it for herself in 1960.
We could see it from our hotel room.
justsusan > Rio's new and very modern cathedral. It's quite spectacular.
It was difficult to get a photo of this building from so close, so the only way to shoot was UP.
The cariocas (natives of Rio) are proud to show off their very modern cathedral in the heart of the city.

justsusan > Ships in the harbor
Mom told us a story about how she was instructed to stay inside when warships were in the harbor. However, being the curious sort, she climbed up the hill behind their house to get a better look. She wore a white dress which turned out to be visible from the ship (with a telescope, I presume). They couldn't tell it was a little girl-- they assumed it was somebody spying on them. Imagine Pearl's surprise and fear when a cannonball exploded on the hill not far from her. She was not hurt, but received a severe scolding when she returned home.

(I don't know what country the warships were from.)
